# Do SMS reminders reduce no-shows? What the data can and cannot show

The honest answer on SMS reminders and restaurant no-shows: what the recorded data shows, why the 30-50% figure is unsupported, and how to test it yourself.

**Somewhere between "reminders cut no-shows by 30-50%" and "reminders do nothing" sits the honest answer, which is that reminders are almost certainly worth sending and nobody can currently tell you how much they move your rate.** That is an unsatisfying position for a headline, so almost nobody publishes it. This page does, because the numbers being quoted around this question do not survive a look at their sources.

We removed the 30-50% claim from this site in August 2026. It was on nine of our English pages and twenty-one across our English, Danish, and German content. This page is the explanation of why.

## The strongest number anyone has, and what it actually says

The [Resos No-Show Index 2026](https://resos.com/restaurant-no-show-rate/) compared reservations that received a delivered SMS reminder with reservations at the same restaurants that did not. The reservations with a delivered reminder recorded a **16% lower no-show rate**. The comparison covered 46,884 exposed reservations at 257 restaurants that had bookings in both groups.

That is a real measurement on a large dataset, and it is the best figure available on this question. It is also an association, not a causal estimate, and the distinction is not academic hedging. Consider what could produce a 16% gap with the reminder doing nothing at all:

- **Contact-detail quality.** A reminder can only be delivered to a guest whose phone number is valid. Guests who typed their number correctly may also be guests who intended to arrive. The comparison group silently includes the mistyped numbers.
- **Booking channel.** Reminders depend on the channel capturing a mobile number. A booking taken over the phone during service, scribbled down, may end up both without a reminder and less carefully recorded.
- **Restaurant behavior inside the same venue.** The comparison is within restaurants, which removes a lot of noise, but a venue that sends reminders on weekend dinner and not on weekday lunch is comparing two different services, not two versions of the same one.
- **Recording discipline.** No-shows have to be marked by staff to appear at all. Only 72.9% of eligible venues in the index marked at least one.

None of that means reminders are useless. It means the 16% is an upper bound on plausibility rather than a promise, and that treating it as "SMS reduces no-shows by 16%" overstates what the method can support.

A useful test when you read any no-show statistic: ask what the denominator is, and ask what would have to be true for the number to be wrong. If the source cannot answer either, the number is marketing.

## Why the 30-50% figure is not credible

The claim that automated reminders cut no-shows by 30-50% is repeated across vendor pages, agency blogs, and industry roundups. We used to repeat it too. When we went looking for the primary source, we could not find one with a stated method, sample size, or denominator.

Set that aside and look at whether it is even arithmetically plausible. The recorded rate across 3.77 million advance reservations at 2,417 restaurants was **2.33%**. Apply a 40% reduction and you move a venue from 2.33% to about 1.4%. On 1,000 bookings a month that is nine covers. Real money over a year, and worth having, but nothing like the picture implied by "reminders will cut your no-shows in half".

The 30-50% figure usually travels alongside a no-show rate of 10-20%, and the two numbers depend on each other. Take a base rate four to eight times the recorded benchmark and any intervention looks dramatic. Correct the base rate and the dramatic reduction has nothing left to work on.

## What about deposits, card-on-file, and no-show fees?

The same problem, worse. Bookings that carry a payment requirement are not a random sample: they are the tasting menus, the Saturday nights, the large parties, the venues confident enough in their demand to add friction. Comparing them with unprotected bookings tells you about the bookings, not about the policy.

We publish no effect figure for deposits, prepayments, or no-show fees, because we do not have one that would survive scrutiny. What can be said honestly is narrower and still useful: a deposit decides what you recover when a booking you cannot refill does not arrive. Be especially careful with single-venue case studies, including the ones vendors publish with striking numbers. A restaurant that went from 19.5% to 0.5% changed its software, and usually also its policy, its staff training, its recording discipline, and often its guest mix, all in the same quarter. That is a story, not a measurement.

## How to test it properly in your own restaurant

You cannot run a randomized trial in a restaurant, and you do not need one. You need a comparison that is not obviously broken.

1. **Fix the definition first.** Count only reservations with a final recorded outcome, attended or no-show. Exclude cancellations, walk-ins, duplicates, and unresolved bookings from the denominator. If your team is inconsistent about marking no-shows, fix that before you measure anything, because a reminder rollout that coincides with better recording will look like it made things worse.
2. **Pick one service, not the whole book.** Saturday dinner only, or Friday lunch only. The rest of the week stays as it is and becomes your comparison.
3. **Give it a full month per service.** No-show rates move on their own: the index records January at 2.62% against August at 2.14%, and Monday at 2.69% against Wednesday at 2.09%. A change smaller than that natural swing is not a result.
4. **Check delivery, not just sending.** Pull the share of reminders that actually delivered. If a fifth of them failed, you are measuring your contact-data quality as much as your reminder.
5. **Watch cancellations go up, and count that as a win.** A good reminder converts a silent no-show into a cancellation you can act on. If your no-show rate falls and your late-cancellation rate rises, the reminder is doing exactly what it should. Track both, plus how often you refill the released table.
6. **Write down what you expected before you look.** It is the cheapest protection against reading noise as confirmation.

If you run reminders and deposits and a policy change in the same month, you will not learn which one did anything. That is fine if you only want the combined outcome. It is not fine if you plan to tell other people what worked.

## So should you send reminders?

Yes, and the reasoning does not depend on the 16%.

A reminder is nearly free, it takes one setup, and it gives an uncertain guest a moment to cancel while the table can still be resold. The index found that 56% of recorded cancellations arrived within 24 hours of service or after the booking had started, which says the interesting battle is not really no-shows against arrivals: it is silent no-shows against cancellations that reach you in time to do something. A reminder with a one-tap cancellation path is the cheapest tool that moves bookings from the first category to the second.

Send them because the mechanism is sound and the cost is trivial. Then measure your own rate, and hold anyone quoting you a percentage to the same standard as this page.

## The bottom line

The honest state of the evidence: delivered SMS reminders are associated with a 16% lower recorded no-show rate, that association cannot be read as a guaranteed effect, no credible published figure exists for deposits or fees, and the widely quoted 30-50% reduction has no traceable source and depends on a base rate four to eight times the recorded benchmark.

Send reminders. Make cancelling easy. Measure one change at a time against your own baseline over a full month. And treat any vendor who promises you a percentage as a vendor.
